Searching obituary and birth indexes

You can search for obituary and birth records from local newspapers using the library catalog. The catalog currently has obituary records from 1934 through 2006 and birth records from 1954 to 2001. (Additional years will be added.)

Each record has brief information on the newspaper and date the notice was published. The record does not have the actual notice from the newspaper. The library does have the original newspapers on microfilm.

You may request a copy of the original notice. Patrons making requests need to give the full legal name of the person and their date of their birth or death along with the date the notice appeared in the newspaper. There is a $5.00 fee for out of county requests.  The maximum number of records that can be requested at one time is five.  Requests are filled in the order they are received.  Please allow two to three weeks for delivery.

Requests should be set to :

In this example, the newspaper is the Statesville Record and Landmark published November 22, 1961. Note that the date in the record is the date the newspaper was published, not the date on which the birth or death occurred.
