This week for Maker Monday we’ve got another edible creation. In this tutorial, we’re going to teach you how you can make homemade hot chocolate mix. You can give as a gift to a friend or make for yourself for a warm treat on a cold winter’s night.
Step 1: Gather your supplies.
For this activity, you will need a mason jar (pint sized or larger), powdered milk, powdered sugar, cocoa powder and some measuring cups. Other optional ingredients are chocolate chips, candy canes, marshmallows, or any other topping you like on your hot chocolate.
If you are giving this is a gift, you might want to use ribbon, a bow, or any craft supplies you have on hand. We’ve also made a tag that you can print and tie to your jar so the person receiving the gift or you know how to make the hot chocolate. You can download and print the tags from the links at the bottom of this post.
Step 2: Layer your ingredients.
Next, you will layer the powdered milk, unsweetened cocoa powder, and powdered sugar in your jar. The size of your jar will determine how much of each ingredient you will need. If you use a pint-sized jar, you will need ½ cup of each ingredient. If you use a jar larger than a pint, you will need ¾ cup of each ingredient. My jar was a pint and a half, so I used ¾ cup of each ingredient. Fill the empty space of your jar, if you have any, with marshmallows, crushed candy canes, or any other topping you would like.
Step 3: Decorate your jar. (Optional)

This step is only necessary if you’re going to give this as a gift. For mine, I took a piece of scrapbook paper, traced the lid, and cut it to make the top look nice. Then, I tied some ribbon around the top of the jar, and attached the ingredients tag.
Step 4: Taste test.
When you’re ready to try out your hot chocolate, mix all of the ingredients together. Have an adult help you warm up some water and add ½ cup of your mix to 8 ounces (or 1 cup) or hot water. Stir it up until all of the powder is dissolved, add your toppings, and enjoy!
*NOTE: This does make a very rich cup of hot chocolate. If you don’t like it so chocolatey, then add a little extra milk to your cup.
